Smart Justice believes too many young people are locked up for non-violent offences, and says there should be more investment in community-based punishments, and programmes to prevent young people getting involved in crime.
As part of the campaign, which is funded by the Arts Council, young people will produce art that represents their lives. This will be used as part of the campaign.
Helen Attewell, campaigns officer in the Northeast, where the campaign is being launched, said: Sending non violent young offenders to prison is a recipe for disaster. A spell in prison is the best way of ensuring a life of crime.
