
When teachers talk about what qualifications are needed for specific careers they refer to what A-levels or degrees are required rather than the more practical side of higher education such as diplomas, apprenticeships or NVQs.
I know very little about these qualifications and believe this is because teachers prefer to advise us on what they see as the more academic route. As a result I would assume that diplomas are a second-rate qualification.
However, we did have a Connexions adviser come in and speak about our options, which was useful as he did at least present the diplomas in a fair way. I found out that diplomas are a serious alternative to A-levels as there are three levels of diploma, the advanced level being equivalent to taking three and a half A-levels, which raises the question: why does my school hardly mention them?
