A gushing reference doesn't help anyone

At the start of the United Nations' international youth year, the report Global Employment Trends for Youth paints a pretty gloomy picture for young people trying to get a foothold in the job market: global youth unemployment has reached "its highest level on record".

Job searching can be a dispiriting exercise, but a decent testimonial can help, not only by helping you to land a job but because it also serves as a symbol that somebody - a teacher, a neighbour, a youth worker - believes in you.

Throughout the summer period I spend an inordinate amount of time writing references for young people. Some are for my students who are now trying to find work in the youth sector. Many come from what are termed, in higher education speak, "non-traditional" backgrounds; in other words, they usually have no family histories of university education or of professional occupation. As their reference, I am their bridge to the possibilities of new forms of work and different futures.
