
The early years sector is grappling with how it will deliver free childcare for disadvantaged two-year-olds from next September. To ease their worries and help with this endeavour, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg announced a £100m injection of capital funding at his party conference last month.
Although it is yet to provide details, the Department for Education intends to distribute this money through local authorities. On releasing the news, the Liberal Democrats said the money would be directed “particularly in areas where the childcare market is less developed”.
The extra cash has been broadly, mildly, welcomed. However, a strong feeling persists in the sector that it might have been better spent on running costs to meet the new entitlement rather than fresh capital.
