Youth workers in hospital fill a void

I've become rather hardened to youth work projects. After writing about the youth sector for more than six years, it takes a lot for a project to really stand out from the crowd.

But the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust's youth service is something special (see page 14). Last year, it won the youth work prize at the CYP Now Service Awards for the work it is doing with young patients and others who might not traditionally access youth projects. The project's aims are simple: to give these young people the same types of opportunities their peers have on the outside and provide them with a trusted non-medical professional who they can turn to for support.

The young people we spoke to clearly love the project and are truly grateful for the role it plays. Sadly, however, it is only one of a handful of hospital-based youth work programmes.
