Vox Pop: Will a single work programme help Neet young people?

2 mins read Youth Work
The government is to launch a single work programme to help young people not in education, employment or training (Neet).

YES - Graham Hoyle, chief executive, Association of Learning Providers

It will help, providing the eligibility criteria allows 16- and 17-year-old who are Neet into the programme, given that this is a large group for whom no state employment support mechanisms are currently in place.

The funding of the work programme must also allow providers to offer basic skills learning to young people to increase their chances of sustainable employment.

Financial support for Neet young people must be urgently reviewed and the provision of non-means-tested Education Maintenance Allowances to certain cohorts of young people should be continued.

NO - Paul Fletcher, director of youth engagement, Rathbone
