The scheme as it currently stands is wildly out of line with what we know about child abuse in Britain. First, its focus on the professions is misplaced. Of those children who experienced sexual abuse outside the family, only a small minority experienced abuse by professionals such as teachers, doctors, social workers or religious leaders. Second, the vast majority of child sexual abusers are not on any government database. Vetting creates a false sense of security and we would do better to empower parents, children and communities through public health and education campaigns.
