Vox Pop: Is the government right to ban 'legal high' mephedrone?

Home Secretary Alan Johnson is seeking to ban synthetic drug mephedrone, linked in the media to several deaths, by 16 April.

The banning of mephedrone clearly indicates to everyone that this is in all likelihood a dangerous substance and there are con-sequences if you sell or consume it.

However, this has to be regarded as just the first step in countering a complex problem.

Allocation of resources to progress research into mephedrone and other associated drugs is now needed. We still know very little about the effect it has when used on its own and even less about how it interacts with other drugs and alcohol. We urgently need to provide accessible and up-to-date information to young people about this drug and its possible effects and support those dealing with problems surrounding its use.
