There is funding beyond Whitehall

There's no doubting that the 201.7m the government is investing in youth facilities will create some fantastic venues for young people over the next few years.

But, equally, the money committed to the Myplace initiative is a mere drop in the ocean compared with the level of investment required to update England's, let alone the rest of the UK's, entire stock of ageing youth centres.

As Youth Work Now columnist Michael Bracey stated last May, it would probably take an investment of similar magnitude to the multi-billion pound Building Schools for the Future programme to bring about a genuine revolution in youth facilities in every corner of the country. With government funds being used to shore up a faltering economy, that kind of investment is out of the question for the foreseeable future.
