
We welcome the ambition and commitment to spread opportunity, but for children it’s so important that this is not limited to maths and English results. If we are to level up the playing field for children at all we will need to go much further to deliver noticeable change that makes a real difference to their lives.
So much focus of the Levelling Up white paper was on living standards but what about the elephant in the room: child poverty? Evidence shows that too many families with salaries are still struggling and indicators are that this is likely to get worse as the cost of living rises. If children are living in households where they can’t afford basics like food, clothing or heating, how are they going to concentrate on anything other than making it through each day?
