My sister said that her teenage daughter Sally would be going to the NEC to audition for Britain's Got Talent. I blurted out that I hoped she failed. Immediately I realised what an insensitive and unsupportive comment this was. I was breaking my golden rule: don't fight battles around the principles you hold through the young people you work with (or, in this case, know). I knew Sally was a good singer and had been appearing in the local pantomime alongside minor celebrities. I had to eat humble pie, trying to explain what I meant to an upset niece and her rather irritated mother.
