Editorial - The battle for funding won't go away

At a time when young people are politically a high priority and unprecedented levels of money have been promised to the youth sector, it's disappointing to hear that many of the old struggles for funding remain.

For this month's cover feature, we focus on the inspirational work of the Shine project in Sheffield (page 14). Here, overweight young people take part in a programme where they receive a range of counselling and dietary advice and get to participate in normal youth work activities like swimming and dance classes.

It's a great project. The health sector has lavished it with awards and last year it won one of the government's Actions Speak Louder prizes. Despite receiving such accolades, its founder Kath Sharman says this targeted form of youth work is heavily reliant on volunteers and it struggles to cover its running costs.
