
If the Illegal Migration Billl becomes law, it will strip away children's rights to claim asylum unless they’re lucky enough to land via limited “safe routes”. The outcome? Detained children, removals, and unaccompanied children being cared for by the Home Office, outside of the traditional care system. And this will happen, despite the Home Secretary's clear duty to protect children's welfare.
Back in 2010, the government pledged to end the mass detention of children for immigration purposes. Our research revealed the lasting damage detention inflicts on children – from weight loss and self-harm to depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Fast forward to today, and we’re staring at the chilling prospect of children facing routine, indefinite detention once again.
