Youth work: Councils are failing to join services up

Too many councils are failing to join up youth services with the delivery of other children's services, says a report published today (14 February) by children's services watchdog Ofsted.

The report, Building on the Best: Overview of local authority youthservices, uncovered a stark contrast between the best and worst youthservices and criticised some local authorities for failing to recognisethe essential role played by youth workers.

One in five of the 33 youth services inspected were judged to needconsiderable improvement, although the quality was deemed to begradually improving.

Flo Hadley, divisional manager for Ofsted's children's servicesinspection division, said: "The best services recognise that youthworkers are essential to engage young people. Not all local areasrecognise this."
