Numbers of young offenders going on to commit further crimes has increased, latest statistics show.

Figures published by the Ministry of Justice show that of the 46,092 under-18s who were cautioned, convicted or released from custody between October 2012 and September 2013, a total of 17,224 reoffended within 12 months.

This gives a reoffending rate of 37.4 per cent, which is two percentage points up on the previous 12 months when the figure was 35.4 per cent.

The average number of reoffences also rose from 2.91 per reoffender for those convicted in the 12 months ending September 2012, to 3.05 per reoffender for those convicted in the 12 months ending September 2013.

Although the overall reoffending rate rose, the reoffending rate for young people leaving custody dropped.
