Youth offending not included in government sentencing review

Chaired by former Lord Chancellor David Gauke, the review is designed to “make sure the most serious offenders can be sent to prison to protect the public”, ministers have said.

It was announced in the wake of prisoners being released from adult jails under an emergency scheme due to chronic overcrowding.

The government has committed to creating 14,000 extra prison places and outlining a 10-year capacity strategy later this year.

In March, the Ministry of Justice announced that Cookham Wood Young Offender’s Institution in Kent would close and be repurposed as an adult prison in a bid to solve a custody capacity crisis.
