Youth justice managers criticised for 'preparing for inspections'

Youth offending service managers have been told not to waste time carrying out mock interviews of staff in preparation for inspections.

HM Inspectorate of Probation's Annual Review 2008/09 found that some youth offending services were using consultants to prepare staff for inspection.

Meanwhile some were "tidying up" of case files prior to inspection, "misrepresenting what had been done or when it was done".

Andrew Bridges, HM Chief Inspector of Probation, said: "Thankfully only a few are making the misguided mistake of preparing for inspection in this way.

"Our inspections require minimum extra work to prepare for the inspection visit itself."

He added that the best way to prepare for inspection is to ensure that good quality work has been done in the first place, and that it has been adequately recorded.
