Youth democracy project awarded £1m grant

A youth democracy project has won a £1 million grant to support young people’s involvement in local decision-making.

Staffordshire’s Know Your Place group successfully bid to the Community Networks Programme, a national body promoting social innovation, funded by non-departmental organisation UK Research and Innovation.

Know Your Place, a network consisting of a young people's steering group, Staffordshire County Council, the University of Staffordshire and Staffordshire Council of Voluntary Youth Services, will use the funds to help 13- to 19- year-olds to carry out community-led research.

The plans include funding for:

The group has already spent an additional £25,000 – received following an expression of interest phase – on testing research priorities such as climate anxiety and the high cost of living. Phase one also saw young people trial a new community research tool.
