Numbers of 18- to 24-year-olds taking part in the government's flagship Work Programme are higher than predicted but fewer than one in four on the scheme are getting a job, it has emerged.

Minutes of the government’s Youth Action Group reveal that while the number of young people participating is greater than initially estimated, it is unclear how successful the programme is for the age group.

Minutes from the group’s most recent meeting state: "Officials noted that the number of referrals of 18- to 24-year-olds coming through is higher than predicted, but that it is too early to understand the impact on outcomes – though some data suggests [between] 18 to 24 per cent [of] clients are moving to employment."

The admission comes after official figures released this week show that unemployment for the 16- to 24-year-old age range has risen to 1,042,000, with Labour leader Ed Miliband today (16 March) setting out his party’s plans to tackle the issue.
