Relationships between staff and inmates at East Sutton Park YOI, one of only two women's open prisons in England and Wales, were assessed as generally "good" and the range of activities on offer was shown to have improved, with "more and better quality education".
But the report also highlighted that some of the dormitory accommodation is unsuitable, cramped and lacking in privacy. Several rules at the prison were also described as "unnecessary and petty".
In 2007, the YOI and women's prison partnered with neighbouring men's resettlement prison, Blantyre House, where prisoners and their families receive assistance and support from the prison and probation service to prepare them for eventual release.
