Youth sector leaders urged organisations to use young people's talent and energy to lead them through the challenging financial climate yesterday (Tuesday 2 November) at the CYP Now For Youth's Sake event.

In a Question Time-style debate, panel members warned that budget cuts threatened to decimate services, but youth-led activism could provide decision-makers with evidence for the importance of continued funding.

"This is a time for organisations to be collaborating, sharing services and costs, and to be using the talent of the young to lead," said Terry Ryall, chief executive of V. "What’s wrong with self-activation? There has been a notion that all young people need to be organised and they need to belong to an organisation, but that’s not the case for all young people."

Her sentiments were echoed by Fiona Blacke, chief executive of the National Youth Agency, who said organisations were already in a position to shift their focus and put young people to the fore.
