The findings of a study into young people’s experiences of custody during 2013/14 shows that three claims of sexual abuse by staff were made by young people being held in secure training centres (STCs), which generally hold more vulnerable young people, and two claims in young offender institutions (YOIs).
A further six allegations of sexual assault were made against other young people in custody.
Penelope Gibbs, chair of the Standing Committee for Youth Justice (SCYJ) has called for answers on what action has been taken as a result of the claims.
"All accusations of sexual abuse in custody should be thoroughly investigated," she said.
