Young people hit by recession need mental health support

1 min read Health Social Care
Youth counselling organisation Youth Access is calling for more mental health support for young people affected by the recession.

Its latest report With Rights In Mind found strong links between mental health problems and poverty, unemployment and homelessness.

The charity is calling for stronger partnerships between advice, mental health, social welfare, housing and youth support services.

Youth Access director Barbara Rayment said: "We remain deeply concerned that the continuing rise of youth unemployment will lead to major increases in both social welfare problems and mental health problems in the medium to long term.

"The evidence points clearly to the need for greater investment in multi-disciplinary service models that can provide age-appropriate advice, counselling and other support services ‘under one roof’."

With Rights in Mind highlights the latest English and Welsh Civil and Social Justice Survey results, which show that around 15 per cent of 18- to 24-year-olds with mental health problems were homeless and around 35 per cent had more general housing problems.
