Young people get chance to shape health services

An initiative launched by the NHS is offering young people the opportunity to help shape the future of health services.

The NHS Citizen programme has been developed by NHS England to offer those who use NHS services the chance to have their say on how local and national services are run.

A website has been set up called Gather, where the public can launch topics and join in with discussions around NHS services.

It includes a section on young people’s health and NHS Citizen is calling for more young people to come forward to offer their views.

On 11 September the NHS Citizen team will collect all issues being discussed and take them to a "citizen’s jury", of 15 members of the public who will then choose five key issues to present to senior figures at NHS England.

NHS Citizen programme director Faiza Khan said: “Young People have a lot to say about healthcare but they are frozen out of how it is run.

"They may not be able to access the system and navigate it so that their views are heard.

"NHS Citizen provides them with an opportunity to ensure that they are not missed off the agenda and that their issues can be taken right to the very top of the NHS decision making process.”

Khan added that although there is no legal requirement for NHS England bosses to act on issues raised, “there is an expectation that NHS England will consider all the issues and respond”.
