Young people being trained for wrong careers, LGA claims

1 min read Careers Guidance
Current approaches to training for young people in England are failing, with too many students gaining qualifications for jobs that don't exist, the Local Government Association (LGA) has warned.

A report published today by the LGA found that many businesses are keen to recruit young people who have been trained as electricians, plumbers, engineers and environmental officers at a rate higher than numbers available.

But, conversely, more young people than necessary are being trained in areas including hair and beauty, personal training and media work.

The report, shows that last year more than 94,000 people completed hair and beauty courses despite there being just 18,000 new jobs in the sector.

Meanwhile, more than double the number of people were trained to work in hospitality, sport and leisure than jobs advertised in the fields.
