YOTs share post-riot workload

Youth offending teams have been offering support to neighbouring teams affected by the riots in an attempt to deal with increased demand, it has emerged.

Gareth Jones, vice-chair of the Association of Youth Offending Team Manager's told CYP Now that around 10 YOTs have been put under severe pressure as a result of public disorder this month.

Caseloads have increased dramatically in some areas, but neighbouring YOTs, already subject to pressure as a result of budget cuts, have been helping to provide resources to cope with the situation, he said.

"There have been offers of assistance to YOTs from colleagues to help out if required. It almost replicates the support of communities with their brushes out, helping the clean-up."

While the majority of YOTs have not been adversely affected by the riots due to their localised nature, Jones said the burden for those currently under pressure is set to continue over the coming weeks.
