YOIs must act as a deterrent, says Brooke Kinsella

Young offender institutions must become places of punishment rather than "holiday camps" in order to tackle knife crime, ex-EastEnders actress Brooke Kinsella has said.

Kinsella, who was asked to carry out a review by Prime Minister David Cameron, said there is currently a stigma around talking about knife crime in schools, with some headteachers reluctant to run lessons for fear their school will be labelled as having a problem.

Another concern raised was that young people who have minor offences on their criminal records can be prevented from getting a job and getting their life back on track.

Other areas of focus should include early intervention, restorative justice and better data sharing on hot spots and young people at risk of becoming involved in knife crime, similar to an initiative launched by London's Serious Youth Violence Board.
