Katy Bourne awarded the money to the YMCA Wise project as new Sussex police figures showed a 19 per cent increase in CSE in the county over the last 12 months, increasing from 823 in 2018 to 977 in 2019.

Sussex Police said: “Across Sussex specialist support services have been stretched to cope with this influx in young people and their families coming forward for help.”

The project, which began in Brighton and Hove nearly a decade ago, has since expanded to cover parts of Surrey and East Sussex.

While it addresses issues such as body image, self-esteem, friendships, family relationships, online safety and consent, it also helps young people in abusive relationships or that have been groomed or sexually exploited.
