World Earth Day: DfE plans for sustainability and climate change education

Plans, announced as part of the government’s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy, include the introduction of a new natural history GCSE for secondary school pupils and carbon literacy training to support at least one sustainability lead in every locally maintained nursery, school, college and university. 

Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi has also pledged greater support for teaching climate change at all levels.

Responding to the government’s announcement, Andy Harrison, head of contracts at Groundwork, said “it is good to see the Department for Education recognising the vital role that schools can play in tackling the climate and nature crises”.
