The awards, now in their seventh year, took place last night at the Hurlingham Club in Fulham, west London. More than 500 people attended the ceremony. A total of 19 awards were presented to individuals and teams from across the UK.
Children’s minister Edward Timpson delivered the keynote address. He said: “Forget the Oscars, forget the Emmys, forget Sports Personality of the Year, it’s the Children & Young People Now Awards that we really need to celebrate.
“There are few jobs as vital as those that you do in this room tonight. Not just for the children and young people you help, but actually for our society as a whole.
“Too often we dwell on what’s not working, but as these awards show, and as the CYP Now magazine shows to us every fortnight, it’s equally important to celebrate success in order to spread it, to shine a light on the achievements.”
Among the winners were Derbyshire County Council’s Care Leavers Employment Team for the Children in Care Award; the Family Drug and Alcohol Court for the Partnership Working Award; and 19-year-old British Youth Council vice chair Dara Farrell for the Children’s Achievement Award.
CYP Now editor Ravi Chandiramani said: “We all know that funding and resources to protect children and to develop their potential are getting more and more stretched, just as the needs of the most vulnerable in our society are getting ever greater. This makes the achievements of all our finalists and winners all the more remarkable.”
The awards were compered by former Newsround presenter Sonali Shah and included a live music performance from east London-based youth group Mammoth Sound.
