Vox pop - Should education have its own government department?

Shadow children's secretary Michael Gove has indicated that he is in favour of an independent education department.

There has been a logic in bringing diverse children's services into a single department, as this matches the situation in local government, but these services could remain as part of a united education department.

It has seemed strange not to have the word education - one of the largest public services - in any government department.

Little has been gained by separating education into two departments and it has been particularly difficult for further education colleges whose remit straddles the Departments for Children, Schools and Families, and Business, Education and Skills.
