Unions call on Williamson to pledge nursery school rescue package

2 mins read Early Years
Hundreds of maintained nurseries could be forced to close next year unless the government pledges a funding rescue package for the early years sector, union leaders have warned.

The National Education Union (NEU) criticised Education Secretary Gavin Williamson for failing to make an announcement about future funding for the maintained nursery sector in his speech at the Conservative Party conference this week.

The NEU said campaigners were trying to save 392 nursery schools which receive a third of their income through the maintained nursery school grant, due to run out in August next year.

"Without the grant, these schools will be forced to close. Parents, teachers and head teachers have been campaigning to save these schools which make such a contribution to social mobility," said Kevin Courtney, NEU joint general secretary.
