It is understood that Lancashire County Council intends to hand Virgin Care a five-year contract worth £104m to run its 0-19 Healthy Child Programme, when the current contract, carried out by the Lancashire Care Trust, runs out in March.
However the council is yet to formally award the contract due to a legal challenge by an unsuccessful bidder, and has refused to formally announce details of the organisations that tendered for the contract.
If the contract is awarded to Virgin Care, it will become responsible for a raft of children's health services, including health visiting and school nurse provision. The healthcare firm work will also work with the council to carry out a review of how children's health services are delivered.
