Uncertain future for youth participation groups

Leading youth participation organisations face an uncertain financial future amid cuts in government funding, CYP Now understands.

 

The British Youth Council (BYC) is also seeking new funding streams to ease its reliance on central government money. The charity relied on 64 per cent of its £1.3m from central government sources last year, including £94,600 from Office for Civil Society strategic partners grant. Last summer, the government department announced that it intends to cut the number of organisations that receive the grant from 42 to 15. BYC is due to submit its application shortly.

The latest published annual accounts for Democracy for Young People – the charity that runs UKYP – show that it had an income of £1.3m in 2009, with a significant proportion coming from central and local government sources.
