Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the four-month extension to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) on Tuesday confirming that employees would continue to receive 80 per cent of their monthly wages up to £2,500.

Under new changes to the financial rescue package introduced to support businesses and workers affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, Sunak said current users of the scheme would be able to bring back furloughed employees part-time from August.

However, in a parliamentary address to MPs outlining the changes, he said employers would be asked at the same time to start sharing with the government the cost of paying people’s salaries.

Sunak said further details of this measure would be released at the end of May.
