The bill, which was introduced in parliament by former Justice Secretary Dominic Raab in June, was planned to replace the Human Rights Act that incorporates the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) into UK law.

However, according to reports, Truss has shelved the bill with the BBC reporting that it is “not expected to progress in its current form”.

Carolyne Willow, director of children’s rights charity Article 39, said: "This is an incredible relief, and we must hope that the bill has gone forever”.

Article 39 is among organisations that have previously campaigned for the bill to be scrapped, arguing that in its current form it “offers no guarantee to protect children”.
