Tribal is now tasked with running the Support and Challenge programme, which will aim to raise the quality of residential care, on behalf of the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) from May 2010.
In a statement the department said: "While there are many excellent children's homes we are clear that more needs to be done to reform the sector as a whole.
"As a result, it is a real priority for the department to ensure that robust support and challenge is in place to help drive improvements within the residential child care sector."
But Sheryl Burton, director of social inclusion at the National Children's Bureau, where NCERCC is based, said she is hopeful the charity will remain involved with work in the residential children's care sector.
