Training provider Young People in Focus shuts down

Youth research and training provider Young People in Focus has closed after struggling in the current financial climate.

The charity, which was known as the Trust for the Study of Adolescence until 2009, has been forced to shut down after 22 years after seeing its income drop as result of swinging public sector cuts.

Training courses run by the charity included evidence-based parenting programmes Take 3, Escape and Challenging Years as well schemes aimed at professionals working with vulnerable young people. It also conducted research and evaluation and produced publications.

Ten staff have been made redundant and a further 10 freelance trainer and researcher roles have been affected.

Kevin Lowe, co-director of Young People in Focus, said: "We had a diverse income base from areas such as training, events and research, but all sources have been diminishing recently. Local authorities in particular have not been able to run training because of their own funding problems."
