Traineeship scheme to be expanded with extra funding

The government has found additional money to help fund more work-based training placements for disadvantaged young people.

The extra £20m allocated to the cross-government traineeship programme could pay for up to 10,000 further placements for young people aged 19- to 23-year-olds.

Under the scheme, employers and training providers are funded to offer work-based training opportunities, as well as educational support, to young people who need to develop the skills and experience that will give them a better chance of securing a job or apprenticeship.

The traineeship programme, launched in August, is a joint Department for Business Innovation and Skills and Department for Education initiative covering young people aged 16 to 23, or 25 for those with a learning difficulty.
