The research, which examines how low-income families are coping with the recession, found that the child trust fund scheme has significantly increased the amount of cash that families are able to save for their children.
Since the initiative was introduced, savings rates have trebled so that two million parents are now saving cash for their children every month.
Carey Oppenheim, co-director at the think-tank, said Conservative proposals to scrap the trust fund for all but the poorest families and disabled children would disadvantage a large number of low-income families.
