Tories blast Labour's 'neglectful' dental record

Children in England suffer serious dental problems by the time they are five years old, the Conservative Party has claimed.

Regional health profile figures have shown on average each five-year-old child in England has at least one tooth actively decayed, been filled or extracted.

In more than 25 per cent of counties in England, children of the same age had two or more decayed, filled or extracted teeth.

Figures obtained by the party from a Freedom of Information request also showed 64 per cent of primary care trusts were no longer giving dental screening to children in schools, following a change in government guidance.

And just over one fifth of trusts had a screening programme widely available to schoolchildren.

Shadow health minister Mike Penning said: "Labour's neglectful approach to dentistry will have a devastating effect on our children."
