Children's services are to be delivered outside of council control in Slough as part of government efforts to improve performance.

In a letter to Slough Council leader Rob Anderson, children’s minister Edward Timpson said he has “very considerable cause for concern” over the quality of services at the authority.

In February, the authority became the first to be given a rating of inadequate under Ofsted’s tougher new inspection framework, which came into force in November last year.

Timpson said: “I consider that new delivery arrangements are needed which give the children’s services a chance to improve outside of local authority control for a period.

“I have therefore asked my officials to commission a review which will examine which alternative structure and governance arrangements will best support improvements in Slough.
