
Almost 75 per cent of children’s social worker vacancies in the year to 30 September were filled by agency staff, up from 68 per cent the previous year but only four percentage points higher than levels seen in 2020.
Vacancies advertised over the same period reached the second highest level since 2017, when current records began, and were 2.4 per cent lower than peak levels seen in 2022.
The same period also saw the number of agency social workers employed by local authorities reach the highest level on record with 7,200 agency social workers in post on 30 September 2023.
