Thousands of teenagers 'neglected at home'

One in seven 14- to 15-year-olds are suffering from neglect at home, according to a Children's Society report that calls for better support for parents of teenagers.

The charity's Troubled Teens report found that 15 per cent of year 10 pupils are not being offered effective care, protection and emotional support from their family.

In addition, eight per cent among this age group said their parents rarely or never encourage them or help them with a problem.

In these households parents were failing to monitor teens' activities and behaviour outside of the home or make sure they were getting effective healthcare, the charity found.

Just under half of those who said they suffered neglect told researchers they had got very drunk recently. This was twice as high as among those who said their parents supported them well emotionally.
