The study, conducted by insurance company Endsleigh and think tank Demos, questioned university students about their aspirations and concerns on the job market, family and community life and politics and the environment.

Out of more than 1,000 respondents, 41 per cent said they would be willing to give up their job in order to raise children, in particular 32 per cent of the male graduates.

Rob Williams, chief executive of the Fatherhood Institute, said: "Despite the wealth of evidence, not least this most recent survey, clearly revealing that fathers would like to be more involved in their children’s upbringing, the current legal arrangements for leave and the workplace culture in the UK do not actively encourage fathers to be carers.
