Teather quizzed on impact of tax credit changes

2 mins read Early Years
Children's minister Sarah Teather was grilled in parliament this week over the impact changes in tax credit eligibility are having on parents and early years settings.

During a debate in parliament on Monday (16 April), Labour MP Kate Green said that in her constituency of Stretford and Urmston around 1,500 families lost child tax credit after the maximum amount of childcare costs that could be reclaimed fell from 80 to 70 per cent in April last year.

From the beginning of this month, Green said a further 465 families face the loss of working tax credit if they do not find additional hours at work.

Under changes to the tax credit system, that came into force this month, working couples will have to work a minimum of 24 hours between them to qualify rather than the previous level of 16 hours.
