Statistics from the General Teaching Council for England’s (GTC) latest teaching register reveal there has been a seven per cent increase in the proportion of teachers aged 39 and under and a 10 per cent decrease in those aged 45 to 59, since 2006.
The proportion of men in teaching varies significantly from early years settings to secondary schools and further education institutions.
In nursery schools, only three per cent of teachers are males, in special schools this rises to a quarter and in secondary schools, 38 per cent of teachers are men.
Further education settings top the register for the most male teachers, with 39 per cent. More than a quarter of primary schools still have no male teachers.
