Teachers forced from profession by lack of SEN training

A lack of special educational needs (SEN) training is forcing teachers out of the profession, the acting general secretary of a leading teaching union has said.

Christine Blower, acting general secretary of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), was speaking at the Liberal Democrat conference in Bournemouth on Sunday, when she made the claim.

She said that teachers needed more training to be able to offer SEN pupils in mainstream schools the best education.
 
One thing we’re finding at the moment is people are coming into work in mainstream schools where they may have a small number of children with SEN and they find that the training isn’t available, she said. The upshot is that people are leaving teaching.

Blower added that without proper SEN training, teachers could not properly support all young people:
