Following a visit to Swindon Youth Justice Service (YJS) last October, HM Inspectorate of Probation rated the service as “outstanding”, with particular praise given to the “innovative” and “effective” way the service has progressed over the past 30 months.

The inspection looked at three areas: the organisational delivery of the service, the quality of work with children sentenced by the courts and the quality of out-of-court disposal work.

They were particularly impressed with the way the YJS staff empowered children under their supervision by including them in decision-making.

Inspectors said: “By getting feedback from children and their parents or carers, the service can work out what works best, and tailor what each child needs. This is in an effort to reduce the likelihood of reoffending and protect the public, and it is working.”
