From April to June there were 711,000 NEET young people, this figure increased to 724,000 by July to September, the official figures show.

This increase “was entirely affected by women” who saw an increase of 14,000 over this three-month period.

Of young people who were NEET during July to September, 383,000 are men and 340,000 women.

It is estimated that one in 10 16- to 24-year-olds in the UK were NEET from July to September. This is 0.2 percentage points up on the quarter and when compared with the same three-month period in 2021.

According to disadvantaged young people’s charity Impetus, “NEET status carries with it the risk of serious economic scarring and negative long-term impacts on a young person’s earning potential, job satisfaction and even mental health”.
